To celebrate opening their 200th hotel, InterContinental commissioned London-based artist, Alexander Hall, to create an incredible sculpture that commemorates their success as a pioneer for luxury travel over the last 72 years. The sculpture consists of 200 individually painted champagne bottles; each paying homage to the individual cultures around the world. Portraying the intertwined artistic process and brand story presented many challenges for Rotolight Master of Light and Director of Photography, Adrian Weinbrecht, who was tasked with telling the story.
The short film consists of filming Alexander throughout a variety of locations, each with its own vastly different ambient lighting situation. Adrian chose to use Anova PRO 2s for the ease and efficiency they offer during set-up and to help achieve a consistent look across all of the shots. With just 72W consumption, the Anova PRO 2 has unrivalled battery power on location, whilst also reducing energy consumption in studio. “We worked on so many different locations; a lot of them public places with lots of passers-by,” Adrian recalls. “But we didn’t need to worry about cabling because we could run them on V-Lock batteries the entire time.”
The Anova PRO 2 afforded Adrian and his team increased versatility on set, with the ability to easily dial in the colour temperature. With outstanding colour accuracy (CRI 96, TLCI 91), time spent in post-production colour correction was minimised. “All the shots you see of Alex working in the studio aren’t staged – we captured them in real time as he worked,” says Adrian. “We had to be careful not to disrupt him as he was working to a tight schedule, and there were times when he worked deep into the night. We actually used the 110-degree Anova PRO 2s not just to light Alex, but also his work because it meant he could keep working in ‘daylight’ conditions even when it was dark outside.” Adrian opted for the wide even spread of light afforded by the 110-degree Anova PRO 2; using a grid and softbox combination for both portraits and filming for a soft, controllable output.
“Using the Anova PRO 2 just solved so many of the concerns we had. It’s flicker-free at any frame rate so we could capture Alex splattering paint over the bottles at 150fps without even thinking about it,” says Adrian. “And then we could shoot promotional stills for the client without needing to switch setups.”
