Greg Gorman
From celebrity portraits and advertising campaigns to magazine layouts and fine art work, Greg Gorman has developed and a unique shooting style over a diverse career spanning more than 40 years. Having shot a number of famous faces such as Elton John and Leonardo Di Caprio and for brands such as PETA, Greg now teaches workshops across the globe whilst working on his own personal portrait and nude projects.
How would you define your style?
The most important things to me in my pictures are the shape, form, and dynamic range between the highlights and the shadows. Shadows can add so much power to a picture and, especially when shooting nudes, I found there is just as much of a story in what you can’t see.
What advice would you give anyone looking to go into photography?
Becoming a photographer is all about finding a voice, so you need to be shooting pictures for yourself. I spent 40 years trying to figure out who ‘Greg Gorman’ was because I was only shooting pictures for other people.
Which is your favourite Rotolight LED for shooting your portraits?
It has to be the Anova PRO 2. The powerful output offers so much for my photography; helping me create striking shadows but also producing beautiful skin tones. I was really intrigued by the circular design that gives that natural, flattering catchlight in my model’s eyes.
